RHSNNY Open House in Croghan NY

Croghan is a bit of a drive for us but it's well worth it to support this particular Historic Station.

The museum has a large collection of railroad artifacts and ephemera on the second floor. It's easy to spend more time than you expected to looking at it all. There's a play spot for the smaller kids and a nice HO scale layout that will interest older children and adults as well. Unfortunately, the model railroad engineer was unable to make it on Saturday so it wasn't running but it's still fascinating to look at.

The trolley ride is short, but it's free and fun. The speed car ride is very reasonably priced and I enjoy it every time especially when I can ride on the open speed car. It's quite an experience when the car stops on the bridge over the Black Creek and you can look straight down into the creek.

Be sure to cross the track in front of the station (safely!) and have a look at #8, the Shay engine owned by the Railway Historical Society of Northern New York, and the snow plow parked behind it.

If you missed this event on Saturday, you'll have another chance to spend a happy afternoon supporting this historic spot and riding the rail up close and exhilarating on both August 5 and September 9.
